The honey bee, scientifically known as Apis mellifera, is one of the most well-known and economically important insects globally. Native to Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia, honey bees have been domesticated and spread worldwide due to their crucial role in pollination and honey production.
Honey bees are small, robust insects with a body length of about 12 to 15 millimetres (0.5 to 0.6 inches). They have a characteristic yellow-brown coloration with black bands on their abdomen. Their bodies are covered with tiny hairs, which help in the collection of pollen. Honey bees have two pairs of wings, with the forewings being larger than the hindwings, and their antennae are long and segmented. Females possess a stinger used for defense, while males (drones) do not have a stinger.

When a new queen is needed, the workers select a few larvae and feed them a special diet of royal jelly, which allows them to develop into queens.
Swarming is a natural part of honey bee reproduction where the old queen leaves the hive with a group of workers to establish a new colony. This usually happens when the hive becomes overcrowded.
Honey bees are immensely beneficial to humans, primarily through their role in pollination, which is vital for many crops and wild plants. They also produce honey, beeswax, and other products like royal jelly and propolis, which have various uses.
However, honey bees can sting when threatened. While a single sting is usually not dangerous, it can cause severe allergic reactions in some people.
