Signs You Have a Mouse Problem

Mice are nocturnal and highly secretive, so an infestation is often well-established before you spot one. The house mouse (Mus musculus) is the most common species found in UK homes and businesses. Look out for these warning signs:

Droppings (small, dark, rod-shaped, 3–6mm long)
Gnaw marks on food packaging, cables, or woodwork
Scratching or rustling noises in walls and ceilings at night
Nests made from shredded paper, fabric, or insulation
Smear marks along walls and skirting boards
Strong ammonia-like smell from urine
Footprints in dusty areas or tracking powder
Chewed food stores or damaged packaging in cupboards

Why You Must Act Quickly

A single female mouse can produce 5–10 litters per year, with 4–8 pups per litter. A small mouse problem can become a large infestation within weeks. Mice contaminate food and surfaces with urine, droppings, and fur, spreading Salmonella, Listeria, and Hantavirus. They also cause structural damage by gnawing through cables, pipes, and insulation — gnawed electrical wiring is a leading cause of unexplained house fires. Early intervention is always faster, cheaper, and more effective.

Mice vs Rats: How to Tell the Difference

Mice and rats require different treatment approaches, so correct identification matters. Here are the key differences:

Why DIY Mouse Control Fails

Supermarket traps and bait blocks can catch individual mice but rarely resolve an infestation. There are several reasons why DIY approaches consistently fall short:

Entry points remain open

Without identifying and sealing the entry points — which can be as small as 6mm — new mice will continue to enter. A mouse can squeeze through any gap it can fit its skull through.

Incorrect bait placement

Mice travel along walls and skirting boards and rarely venture into open spaces. Traps placed in the wrong locations will be ignored entirely.

Bait shyness

Mice are neophilic (attracted to new objects) but can become bait-shy if a trap kills a colony member nearby. Rotation of trap types and locations is often required.

Underestimating the colony size

What appears to be one or two mice is often a much larger colony. Without a full survey, it is impossible to know the true extent of the infestation.

Our Mouse Control Process

1

Survey & Assessment

Our RSPH-qualified technician carries out a thorough inspection of your property — inside and out — identifying entry points, harbourage areas, runways, and the extent of the infestation. We look in lofts, under floors, behind appliances, and in roof voids where mice commonly nest.

2

Targeted Treatment

We use a combination of tamper-resistant bait stations, snap traps, and tracking dust placed precisely along mouse runways. All rodenticides used are UK-approved and applied in strict accordance with the CRRU Code of Practice to minimise risk to non-target species.

3

Proofing & Prevention

Once the infestation is under control, we identify and seal all entry points to prevent re-infestation. This includes filling gaps around pipes with steel wool and sealant, fitting door brushes, and repairing damaged air bricks. Mice can enter through any gap 6mm or larger — thorough proofing is essential.

4

Follow-Up Visits

We include follow-up visits to check bait uptake, reposition traps as needed, and confirm the infestation has been fully resolved. We don't consider the job done until your property is completely mouse-free.

5

Hygiene Advice

We provide practical advice on reducing attractants — food storage, waste management, and structural maintenance — to reduce the risk of future infestations.

Landlords, Letting Agents & Commercial Properties

Landlords have a legal duty under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 to keep rental properties free from rodent infestation. A mouse problem in a tenanted property can result in local authority enforcement action and significant reputational damage. We work with landlords, letting agents, and property management companies across the North West to provide fast, discreet, and documented pest control services.

For commercial properties — including food businesses, warehouses, and offices — mice represent a serious food safety and reputational risk. We offer scheduled commercial contracts with full documentation for audit purposes, ensuring compliance with the Food Safety Act 1990 and BRC/SALSA standards.

Quick Answers

How quickly can you respond?

We offer same-day callouts across the North West, 7 days a week including bank holidays.

How many visits will I need?

Most residential infestations are resolved in 2–3 visits. We include follow-up visits as part of the treatment programme.

Is the treatment safe for pets and children?

All products are applied in tamper-resistant bait stations and in locations inaccessible to children and pets. We will advise you on any precautions before treatment.

Will mice come back after treatment?

Not if entry points are properly sealed. Proofing is a key part of our service — we identify and seal all access points to prevent re-infestation.

Do I need to leave the property?

No. Mouse control treatments do not require you to vacate the property. We will advise you on any specific preparation needed before our visit.
