Summer Pest Threats in the North West and How to Handle Them

18 May 20255 min read

As temperatures rise across Merseyside, Cheshire, and Lancashire, so does pest activity. Summer is the peak season for many of the UK's most common pests — and the North West is no exception. At Country Pest Solutions, we see a significant increase in call-outs during the summer months, and we want to help you stay one step ahead.

The Biggest Summer Pest Threats in the North West

Wasps — Wasp colonies grow rapidly through summer, reaching their peak population in August and September. A single nest can contain tens of thousands of wasps. As the season progresses and the colony's food supply changes, wasps become more aggressive and more likely to sting. Never attempt to remove a wasp nest yourself — always call a professional.

Ants — Summer is ant season. Flying ant day (when queen ants take their nuptial flight) typically occurs in July or August, and ant activity in kitchens and gardens peaks during the warmer months. Black garden ants are the most common species, but we also deal with ghost ants and pharaoh ants in commercial premises.

Flies — House flies, bluebottles, and cluster flies are all more active in summer. Flies can spread bacteria including Salmonella and E. coli, making them a particular concern in kitchens and food preparation areas. Fly screens, proper waste management, and prompt treatment of infestations are all important.

Fleas — Flea populations explode in warm weather. If you have pets, summer is the time to be most vigilant. Fleas can infest carpets, soft furnishings, and bedding — and they don't just affect pet owners. Fleas can survive for months without a host, so a property that has previously housed pets can still harbour an infestation.

Bed Bugs — Summer travel season means more opportunities for bed bugs to hitchhike into your home. Hotels, holiday lets, and public transport are all potential sources. Check your luggage and clothing carefully after any trip.

Rats and Mice — While rodent activity doesn't stop in summer, the warmer months bring increased activity around outdoor dining areas, BBQ spots, and compost heaps. Keep food waste secure and remove potential harbourage sites from your garden.

Summer Pest Prevention Tips

  • Clear up fallen fruit from gardens promptly
  • Ensure compost bins have tight-fitting lids
  • Check loft spaces and eaves for early signs of wasp nest activity
  • Treat pets regularly with vet-recommended flea treatments
  • Inspect hotel rooms before unpacking when travelling
