Summer holidays are the perfect time to relax, unwind, and enjoy a change of scenery. But one unwelcome souvenir that no one wants to bring home is bed bugs. These tiny pests are experts at hitchhiking in luggage, clothing, and personal belongings — and once they're in your home, they can be incredibly difficult to get rid of without professional help.
Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects that feed on human blood — typically at night. They don't fly or jump, but they're expert hitchhikers. Hotels, hostels, trains, planes, and even cruise ships can harbour bed bugs regardless of how clean or expensive the establishment is.
Once they get into your luggage or clothing, they can travel home with you and quickly establish an infestation in your bedroom — and beyond.
1. Inspect Your Hotel Room Before Unpacking
Before you settle in, do a quick inspection. Pull back the bed sheets and check the mattress seams, headboard, and bed frame for small brown insects, tiny white eggs, or dark rust-coloured spots (bed bug droppings). Check behind the headboard and in any upholstered furniture too.
2. Keep Your Luggage Off the Floor and Bed
Use the luggage rack provided — but inspect it first. Keep your suitcase elevated and away from the bed and walls. If you're concerned, keep your luggage in the bathroom, which is less likely to harbour bed bugs.
3. Use Luggage Liners or Protective Covers
Hard-shell suitcases are harder for bed bugs to penetrate. You can also use luggage liners or sealable bags for your clothing to add an extra layer of protection.
4. Wash and Dry Your Clothes Immediately on Return
As soon as you get home, put all your travel clothes directly into the washing machine on a hot wash (60°C or above). Follow with a tumble dry on high heat — bed bugs cannot survive temperatures above 50°C. Don't bring your suitcase into the bedroom until you've inspected it.
5. Inspect and Vacuum Your Suitcase
Before storing your luggage, inspect every seam, pocket, and fold. Vacuum the inside thoroughly and dispose of the vacuum bag immediately. Consider storing your suitcase in a sealed plastic bag in a garage or storage area rather than in your bedroom.
If you notice bites, blood spots on your sheets, or tiny insects in your bedding after returning from a trip, act quickly. Bed bug infestations grow fast — a single female can lay hundreds of eggs.
Don't try to tackle the problem with DIY sprays alone. Over-the-counter products rarely reach all hiding spots and can cause the bugs to scatter further through your home.
